What is in a Name?

pirategirl, ok yeah I get it. Your one of those Disney people. Johnny Depp, Pirates of the Caribbean, Yo Ho, Yo Ho a Pirates Life for me. Ok makes sense.

Not quite. Long before my Disney World fascination began I picked an internet handle that has stuck. Go back in time. Back to when getting online meant that distinct dial up teeth chattering connection noise. Back when your online activity was measured in hours and we all had a stack of AOL free start up discs laying around. Back when your mom picking up the telephone line interrupted your 3 1/2 hour download of the latest Spice Girls song from Napster. Ahh the 90’s.

Another free trial of AOL or Netzero was coming to an end. I was about to lose yet another hard thought up email address..  And then I heard of yahoo this new FREE email address you could get. And no matter how many times you cancelled your internet services to go to a better deal elsewhere (or when you mom got a $50 charge on your credit card and you were grounded from the internet) you could keep your email address.  For free! No strings attached.

Sign me up. I pulled up yahoo and started signing up. And stopped. Stumped. Picking an email address then was difficult but little did I know then that an email address could define you. School and future employers would use it, credit card companies would send your bills to it, and it would not be limited to just your friends. I started looking thru friends email addresses and thinking thru nicknames, favorite sports teams and hobbies. Nothing. Then I was hit with sudden inspiration. And copycatness. My brother had a yahoo email already. His email address was a play on his college mascot, since I was headed there in a few years as well so I stole his idea and pirategirl was born.

How did you get your name? Does it have a great story with it or did you just get lucky and the perfect internet handle came to your right away? Share your story in the comments below.
